SUMMARY:Speaker Presentation - Tour of Eastern Indonesia
DESCRIPTION:  \nRed Bird of Paradise\, Waigeo Island ©John Sterling \nPROGRAM DESCRIPTION \nJoin the Yolo Bird Alliance at its September program meeting featuring John Sterling of SterlingBirds\, who will enlighten as well as entertain us on birding in Indonesia. \nJohn will take us on a virtual adventure visiting many islands from Flores to Waigeo in eastern Indonesia and will end the tour in mainland West Papua with its abundance of New Guinea endemics. Over 130 species are endemic to a single or small cluster of islands\, so be prepared to see photos of birds seen by few birders.  \nSPEAKER BIO \nJohn has been a birder since he saw a Pileated Woodpecker in his native Napa County during a 5th grade environmental education camp. He studied wildlife science at Humboldt State University and embarked in an ornithological career in 1981. He has since traveled to over 50 countries in search of birds\, with many trips as a researcher or tour leader. John birds the heck out of all 58 California counties and is increasingly interested in iNaturalist and documenting as many life forms as possible. His website is www.sterlingbirds.com. \nThis event is free\, and you do not need to be a member of Yolo Bird Alliance. But if you would like to join\, visit https://yoloaudubon.org/join-renew-donate/. \nThe Yolo Bird Alliance fosters an appreciation of birds and other wildlife through educational programs and field trips\, brings conservation issues to public awareness\, and acts to preserve Yolo County bird life and habitat. To learn more about the Yolo Bird Alliance\, visit its web page at https://yolobirdalliance.org/. You can also visit the Yolo Bird Alliance on Facebook – https://www.facebook.com/YoloBirdAlliance. If you would like to join and receive the monthly newsletter\, visit https://yolobirdalliance.org/join-renew-donate/. \nThe meeting will be held in person at the Davis Senior Center\, 646 A St\, Davis\, CA 95616. \nOr\, Register to Attend the Meeting online via Zoom. Zoom participants will be admitted a few minutes before 7:00 pm.  \nClick here for the Zoom registration link\, or you can copy & paste this link in your browser – https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/6IBoClUzRiKv_dt-_GhBEw \nPlease note: Participants may join the meeting the the zoom desktop client downloaded on their computer or on their Apple or Android mobile phone or tablet to access the meeting. SUMMARY:YBA Research Grant Talks
DESCRIPTION:YBA Program: October 21\, 2026\nProgram Time: 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM PT\nSpeaker Sign-in: 6:30 – 6:45 PM\nSpeakers: Siiri Hamberg\, Juliette Dalicano\, Sofia Nadeau\, Georgia Coleman\, Zane Pickus\nZoom Meeting Link: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/S0hur9jWTCyWTkFh1YMfNw \nOverview\nJoin Yolo Bird Alliance for our October program\, featuring five recipients of YBA small grants who will share their fascinating work on birds and conservation in our region. \nSiiri Hamberg – “Urbanization and Parasite Abundance in the Black Phoebe”\nSiiri will share research from UC Davis’s Project Phoebe exploring how urbanization affects parasite abundance in Black Phoebes and what may be driving those patterns. \n Juliette Dalicano & Sofia Nadeau – “How Habitat Shapes Diet and Reproductive Success in Davis Cavity-Nesting Songbirds”\nUsing DNA from fecal samples\, Juliette and Sofia are investigating how habitat influences the diets and reproductive success of cavity-nesting songbirds around Davis. \nGeorgia Coleman – “Chasing (Gray) Ghosts: Northern Harrier Nesting Ecology Research in the Sacramento Valley”\nAfter two nesting seasons searching for and monitoring Northern Harrier nests\, Georgia will share preliminary findings on where these elusive raptors nest and the habitats they depend on. \n Zane Pickus – “Habitat for the Future: How Conservation\, Agriculture\, and Climate Change Intersect in California Rice Fields”\nCalifornia rice fields can serve as important “surrogate wetlands” for fish and wildlife. Zane will discuss UC Davis research examining how conservation\, agriculture\, wildlife\, and greenhouse gas emissions intersect in these valuable habitats. \nMeet the presenters:\nSiiri Hamberg is a UC Davis undergraduate studying Evolution\, Ecology\, and Biodiversity and a researcher with Project Phoebe. Juliette Dalicano and Sofia Nadeau are undergraduate researchers in Wildlife\, Fish\, and Conservation Biology at UC Davis. Georgia Coleman is a master’s student at the University of Missouri studying Northern Harrier nesting ecology in the Sacramento Valley. Zane Pickus is a recent UC Davis graduate in Wildlife\, Fish\, and Conservation Biology\, an avid birder\, and a member of the Yolo Bird Alliance Board of Directors. \nCome hear about some of the exciting bird research happening right here in our region—and see how Yolo Bird Alliance small grants are helping support the next generation of bird researchers and conservationists. \nThis month’s program will take place at the Davis Senior Center (646 A Street\, Davis\, Ca.) and begin at 7:00PM.
