SUMMARY:Falcon Accipiter Buteo – A 35-Year Review of Community Science at the GGRO
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for our first General Meeting of the fall season. Allen Fish\, director of the Golden Gate Raptor Observatory\, will present on the organization’s results\, revelations\, conundrums\, quandaries\, and half-baked hypotheses. \nBay Area native Allen Fish was hired to direct the GGRO starting in 1985 after a robust education in avian ecology from UC Davis. His first public speech was on the Yosemite Great Gray Owls for the then-Davis Audubon Society in 1981 using Kodak slides. \nAbout the Golden Gate Raptor Observatory: Since the mid-1980s\, volunteers and staff of the GGRO have been tracking the annual fall migration of birds of prey over the Marin Headlands\, the largest known flight path on the Pacific Coast. Thirty-five years later — with 42\,391 raptors banded and 720\,927 raptors counted – just what have we learned? \nCome to meeting to find out what GGRO has learned: which California city has the largest density of nesting Cooper’s Hawks ever recorded? What raptor showed the highest resilience to West Nile virus? What was the rarest raptor documented in the Marin Headlands in the past three decades? Are you more likely to call a Coop a Sharp-shin or vice versa? What is the raptor species of greatest conservation concern in California today? \nThe program starts at 7:30 p.m.\, but everyone is invited for refreshments and conversation at 7:00. We meet at the Davis Senior Center\, 646 A Street in Davis.

SUMMARY:Napa River at American Canyon
DESCRIPTION:Adjacent to the Napa River is a restored shoreline walking trail; where tidal fluctuations can be observed. First we’ll walk along a large tidal lagoon looking for resting birds. After a short level walk the rising tide will bring foraging birds as they come closer to us. \nDuring this time of year fall migration is underway; we can be on the lookout for surprises along with the expected sandpipers\, godwits\, willets and ducks; some still in premolt into basic plumage. Mute Swans are a bonus to expect since they have been a breeding species along the river for more than 20 years. \nAll along the walkway we’ll be enjoying the open vistas looking west toward the wetlands and over Napa River. \nPlan to meet at 7:30 am at Marketplace Shopping Center\, near Big 5 Sporting Goods\, at W. Covell & Highway 113 in Davis. Bring binoculars\, scopes and snacks/lunch to bring along on this morning walk. After returning to cars the group will have a lunch in the picnic area before returning to Davis. \nContact co-leaders:\nSami LaRocca [530 908-0288; sami182@wavecable.com\nJohn Mott-Smith [530 400-7622; johnmottsmith@comcast.net]

SUMMARY:International Bird Rescue
DESCRIPTION:JD Bergeron\, Executive Director of International Bird Rescue located in Fairfield\, CA participated in the annual nesting albatross census on Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge. The census occurs once each year roughly between mid- December and the first week in January. The Refuge is located within the Papāhanaumokuākea Marine National Monument\, approximately 1\,350 miles northwest of Honolulu. JD will present all the latest information\, and amazing visuals\, about his work on the census to share with our community. \n\n\n\nAbout Midway Atoll: Midway Atoll is the site of the world’s largest albatross nesting colony as well as numerous other globally important species such as the endangered Hawaiian monk seal and Laysan duck. The work conducted by the nesting albatross census team on Midway Atoll provides vital information found few places on earth to researchers\, managers\, conservation groups and the global community interested in preserving and protecting oceanic seabirds and their nesting habitats. \n\n\n\nAbout International Bird Rescue: In 1971 after 800\,000 gallons of crude oil spilled into the bay\, concerned individuals led by a registered nurse named Alice Berkner jumped into action\, bringing International Bird Rescue to life.  Staff and volunteers work alongside clients\, partners\, and the public to find solutions. Today\, we research best practices at our crisis response hospitals in California and Alaska and share them worldwide. \nThe program starts at 7:30 p.m.\, but everyone is invited for refreshments and conversation at 7:00. We meet at the Davis Senior Center\, 646 A Street in Davis.

SUMMARY:Four Lakes and a Lek
DESCRIPTION:2019 Field Trip to Susanville and Environs \nFriday through Sunday\, March 29-31\, 2019 or \nRain check – Friday through Sunday\, April 5-7\, 2019  \nField Trip Organizer – Carl Schwedler \n530-210-3104 \nmarcialberry@icloud.com \n This trip has a limited number of participants. Please contact the trip leader if interested. \nA three-day trip to the Susanville area to observe a Greater Sage-Grouse lek\, with visits to four nearby mountain/high-desert lakes. \nFriday afternoon begins with a meet-up at Donner Lake (Lake #1) along the way to Susanville\, followed by a Juniper Titmouse drive-by on Red Rock Road north of Reno. \nSaturday morning we go out to the Belfast Petroglyphs\, then bird the Amedee wetlands and Honey Lake (Lake #2) on the way back to the hotel for a civilized brunch. In the afternoon we bird up Jack’s Valley through the Willow Creek Wildlife Area and then all the way counter-clockwise around Eagle Lake (Lake # 3) to the opposite bottom\, at Christie Day Use Area and Gallatin Beach. Then clockwise back home for dinner. \nThen it’s up before dawn Sunday morning to grab some coffee and be on the road by 4:15 AM (yes\, seriously\, THAT early) for the Shaffer Sage-Grouse Lek east of Susanville (the “Lek”). Bring your scope/big camera. The site is about a mile from the main road\, so we would need to consolidate into four-wheel drive or high clearance vehicles. We will have to walk if it is in any way wet or rainy. After brunch back at Susanville\, we then cross the mountains and bird lake shores and meadows of Lake Almanor (Lake #4)\, birding down its west side and finally heading home from Canyondam via Oroville and Road 70. \nExpected birds include herons and egrets\, wading birds\, Sandhill Crane\, gulls\, eagles\, hawks and falcons\, geese\, grebes and ducks\, and woodpeckers (including White-headed and Williamson’s Sapsucker). At the lek site we’ll be hoping for the sage trifecta\, i.e.\, Sage Thrasher\, Sagebrush Sparrow and of course the Greater Sage-Grouse\, but elsewhere on the lookout for mountain specialties\, e.g.\, Golden Eagle\, Mountain Bluebird\, Stellar and Pinyon Jays\, Townsend’s Solitaire\, Cassin’s Finch\, Crossbills\, etc.. \nAccommodations: \nIndividual arrangements for lodging should be made in advance at either the SureStay Plus Hotel by Best Western\, 2785 Main Street\, Susanville\, CA (530-257-4123)\, (breakfast voucher to the Lumberjack restaurant included)\, or the Super 8 (530-257-2782) (continental breakfast in hotel). \nYolo Audubon Society field trips are free and open to the public. Some trips may be limited by number of participants. Car-pooling is encouraged\, but not arranged by the club\, and all rides are private arrangements between driver and riders. \nHeavy rain or high winds may cancel any trip. \n

SUMMARY:Fire\, Grazing\, and Wintering Bird Communities at Bobcat Ranch
DESCRIPTION:Frank Fogarty will be presenting recent research that he and Chris Adlam\, a fellow doctoral candidate at UC Davis\, conducted at Audubon’s Bobcat Canyon Ranch near Winters\, California. \nTheir field work from 2016-2018 examined how recent fires\, cattle grazing\, and vegetation influence the diversity of the wintering bird population across the ranch. Many California bird species have been studied extensively on their breeding ranges\, but far less is known about their ecology in winter. Bobcat Ranch presented a fascinating natural laboratory to study wintering birds\, with its diverse foothills vegetation and both grazed and ungrazed parcels. The reserve also partially burned in both 2016 and 2017\, allowing a direct comparison between adjacent burned and unburned areas. \nThe Yolo Audubon monthly meeting will take place at the Davis Senior Center (646 A St\, Davis\, CA 95616). The program starts at 7:30 p.m.\, but everyone is invited for refreshments and conversation at 7:00.

SUMMARY:How Woodpeckers Can Save the World (or at least your local woodland!)
DESCRIPTION:North American woodpeckers perform multiple keystone roles in the ecology of our forests and woodlands. More than 40 North American bird species\, dozens of mammals\, and innumerable invertebrates depend upon woodpeckers for their own lifestyles. However\, humans need habitat\, too\, as well as wood products and agricultural resources. By clearing forests\, felling snags\, and suppressing fire\, we have prevented woodpeckers from doing their jobs. Learn the basics of woodpecker natural history\, anatomy\, and ecology\, and prepare to become new ambassadors for forest and woodpecker conservation. \nJoin Steve Shunk as he presents a program on woodpeckers at the January monthly meeting of the Yolo Audubon Society. This meeting will take place at the Davis Senior Center (646 A St\, Davis\, CA 95616). The program starts at 7:30 p.m.\, but everyone is invited for refreshments and conversation at 7:00.

SUMMARY:Putah Creek Christmas Bird Count and Compilation Potluck
DESCRIPTION:Audubon’s Christmas Bird Count began as an alternative to the Christmas “Side Hunt” and has since become a fine tradition with tens of thousands of volunteers throughout the Americas braving the elements to take part in the effort. This long-term dataset has proven invaluable\, providing a picture of how the continent’s bird populations have changed in time and space over the past century. Yolo Audubon Society’s count circle is centered on Putah Creek and was initiated in 1971. Nearly 250 varieties of birds have been counted so far. Recent findings include Ring-necked Duck\, Lesser Scaup\, Common Loon\, Red-necked Grebe\, Rough-legged Hawk\, Greater Roadrunner\, Long- and Short-eared Owl\, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker\, Winter Wren\, and Mountain Bluebird. \nThe 2018 Christmas Bird Count will take place on Sunday\, December 16th.  As in previous years the event is organized by Steve Hampton. We have posted information on the count\, the ten areas\, a link to a Google Earth map of the count circle and its 10 areas\, and contact information for the area leaders at  http://yoloaudubon.org/christmas-bird-count/. Please sign up for the area of your choice by contacting Steve or one of the area leaders directly.  Contact information for each leader is on this page. You are invited to join us after the count for an evening potluck at the Redwood Building at 1111 Anderson (NOT the Davis Senior Center).  The building is located directly southwest of the tennis courts on Anderson.  You must park on the street or at the Cesar Chavez Elementary School parking lot. \nIt’s always a fun evening\, and you’re welcome to the potluck even if you don’t count during the day. \nWe hope to see you on Sunday! \nThe Putah Creek CBC is part of Audubon’s 119th Christmas Bird Count to be conducted this coming season\, with all counts held between the dates of Friday\, December 14\, 2018 through Saturday\, January 5\, 2019. You may participate in as many counts as you wish!\nFind out more: http://www.audubon.org/conservation/science/christmas-bird-count

SUMMARY:Woodland East Regional Pond
DESCRIPTION:Introduction to Bird Watching – Birding Walk for Novices \n  \nThis free trip is for participants who are new to bird watching\, or just curious about wild birds. This trip is appropriate for children 5 yrs. and older. The Woodland East Regional Pond\, also known by local birders as the Farmers Central Pond\, is a storm water detention pond\, landscaped with native plantings that attracts both resident and migrant birds.   Yolo County Resource Conservation District (YCRCD) will partner with Yolo Audubon on this trip and provide information on the pond\, how it works and native habitat development around the pond. They will also provide the group with access beyond the gates\, which is an area not normally open to the public. This location has easy-walking pathways and viewing platforms to enhance this outing. When water is available\, the pond hosts Canada Geese\, Great & Snowy Egrets and other water birds. In the trees\, shrubs and grasses\, we can expect to see Yellow-rumped Warblers\, White-crowned Sparrows and other small birds. Meet at 8:15 AM at the Woodland East Regional Pond parking lot at the “T” intersection of Yolo County Road 102 and Farmers Central Road in Woodland. Trip will conclude by noon.  Yolo Audubon Co-Leaders Ken Ealy & Carlos Castaneda will have binoculars to loan\, but if you have binoculars\, bring them. Strong wind or heavy rain cancels the trip. SUMMARY:On the trail of Madagascar Endemics — Birds\, Lemurs\, Chameleons and more!
DESCRIPTION:Madagascar is a must-see place for any birder or naturalist. Having been isolated for over 80 million years\, it is a unique biogeographic region referred to by some as the eighth continent. All of its native land mammals are indigenous including over 70 species of lemurs\, a primate group largely confined to Madagascar. Of the more than 250 species of birds found there\, over half are endemic\, including six families of birds found only there and on some small nearby islands. Yolo Audubon Society members Sid England\, Randy Beaton and Ann Brice visited Madagascar in 2017. Please join them to learn about this fascinating place and experience the magic of the island.\nThe Yolo Audubon monthly meeting will take place at the Davis Senior Center (646 A St\, Davis\, CA 95616). The program starts at 7:30 p.m.\, but everyone is invited for refreshments and conversation at 7:00.

SUMMARY:Davis Cemetery
DESCRIPTION:Come look for birds and friendly goblins at the Davis Cemetery on this Halloween weekend. The 28-acre cemetery is a National Wildlife Federation certified wildlife habitat. Many species of birds are attracted to this suburban woodland and the historic swale; the cemetery is well known for a large flock of Wild Turkeys. Several species of raptors are regular at the cemetery\, including the White-tailed Kite\, Cooper’s Hawk\, Red-shouldered Hawk\, and Barn Owl. Western Bluebirds\, Nuttall’s Woodpeckers\, Red-breasted Sapsuckers\, Dark-eyed Juncos\, and Yellow-rumped Warblers also winter at the cemetery. \nBirders at all skill levels are welcome. This will be a morning walk. Since it can be wet\, sturdy shoes or boots are recommended. We will meet in the Davis Cemetery at 820 Pole Line Road\, Davis (the corner of Pole Line Rd and East 8th St.) at 8:00 AM. The main entrance is on the East 8th Street side of the cemetery. There is limited parking in the cemetery; therefore\, carpool or bike if you can. We will meet at the mini-parking area on the east driveway (on the right as you enter the cemetery). Contact the trip leader\, Ed Whisler (916-204-0471 [cell phone] or edwhisler@yahoo.com [email]) for more information. \n

SUMMARY:Sacramento and Colusa National Wildlife Refuges
DESCRIPTION:  \n We will visit the Sacramento NWR north of Colusa and then the Colusa NWR. Both have driving tours so we will spend most of the time in cars. SNWR has a short walking tour on level ground as well as a very nice visitor center with restrooms. Colusa has a large\, accessible observation deck. These two refuges host thousands of wintering waterfowl\, as well as resident and migrant songbirds\, owls and raptors. Easy viewing for birders. Never disappointing! The rare Falcated Duck has been seen at Colusa in the past. Bring lunch\, snacks\, water\, layers of clothing\, binoculars and a spotting scope if you have one. Rain cancels trip. Meet to carpool at 7:30 a.m. at the parking lot at Big 5 in the Marketplace Shopping Center in Davis\, 1301 W. Covell Blvd. Please plan to contribute to $6 per-car fee at the Sacramento refuge.
