SUMMARY:Bobelaine Sanctuary CANCELED
DESCRIPTION:THIS TRIP IS CANCELED DUE TO POOR TRAIL CONDITIONS. It may be rescheduled; look for updates later. \nWe will be visiting the 430 acre National Audubon Sanctuary on the Feather River with over 6 miles of  dirt trails\, managed by Sacramento Audubon.  We will be looking for the last of the overwintering passerines plus nesting season should be in full swing.   We will be looking for local breeders as well as opportunistic raptors.  The Feather River\, riparian forest and surrounding fields could lead to some different sightings than are usually found in Yolo County.  Anticipate a fair amount of flat land walking\, though not all 6 miles!\nMeet at 7:30am at the parking lot at Big 5 in the Market Place shopping center to carpool to the sanctuary.  All levels of birders are welcome.  There will not be a designated lunch break\, but bring snacks or lunch and plenty of water.  Bring binoculars.   The trip will likely end in mid- to late afternoon.  Be prepared for hot weather.  Rain and high winds cancel this trip.  Trip leaders are Sharon Kirkpatrick 530-220-3735\, sleclark@ucdavis.edu  and Joe Clemens\, jclemens211@yahoo.com.

SUMMARY:Mitchell Canyon
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday April 21 for a walk in Mitchell Canyon at Mount Diablo\, one of the premier sites for spring migrant birding in the East Bay. The canyon bottom contains riparian habitat bordered by dramatic chaparral-covered slopes. A nice collection of warblers\, tanagers\, grosbeaks\, vireos\, and flycatchers are expected at this time of year\, and there’s a good chance we will see Calliope Hummingbirds. A variety of wildflowers should also be present. We will meet at 8:00 AM at the Mitchell Canyon Visitor Center ($6.00 entrance fee). Please wear sturdy shoes for the unpaved trail and bring binoculars\, water\, and a lunch. We will stay along the relatively flat trail that follows the creek\, but there is some elevation change. The trip will last until around noon\, though some of us may stay out longer depending on the bird activity. The trip leader is Michael Strom (408)505-0328 or masam321@yahoo.com). \nSome of us will meet to ride-share to Mt. Diablo. We will meet at 6:45 at Big 5 in Davis. As always\, Yolo Audubon does not arrange carpools\, and all rides are private agreements between the driver and riders.

SUMMARY:Avian Conservation in California's Central Valley
DESCRIPTION:On April 18\, UC Davis research ecologist Melanie Truan will speak at the Yolo Audubon meeting on the topic of avian conservation in the Central Valley.\nCalifornia’s agriculturally-dominated Central Valley is one of the most altered landscapes in North America and remains vulnerable to strong economic and population growth pressures that impact bird and wildlife populations. Yet\, despite these pressures\, the Central Valley provides some of the most important bird habitat in North America\, and as part of the Pacific Flyway\, hosts one of the largest concentrations of migratory birds in the world. Dr. Truan will discuss some of the integrated research initiatives underway to better understand the ecology of these altered landscapes as well as ongoing efforts to protect\, restore\, and enhance habitat for the benefit of wildlife and humans alike.\nThe Yolo Audubon meeting will be held at the Davis Senior Center\, 646 A Street in Davis\, from 7:30 to 9 pm on April 18th. The meeting is open to the public\, and people are invited to arrive at 7 pm for conversation and refreshments.

SUMMARY:FOUR LAKES AND A LEK
DESCRIPTION:CANCELLED DUE TO WEATHER \n2018 Field Trip to Susanville and Environs \nField Trip Organizer – Carl Schwedler\n530-210-3104\nmarcialberry@icloud.com \n  \nA three-day trip to the Susanville area to observe a Greater Sage-Grouse lek\, with visits to four nearby mountain/high-desert lakes. \nFriday afternoon (1:00 pm) begins with a meet-up at Donner Lake (Lake #1) along the way to Susanville\, followed by an attempt at a Juniper Titmouse on Red Rock Road. \nSaturday morning we go out to the Belfast Petroglyphs\, then bird the Amedee wetlands and Honey Lake (Lake #2) on the way back to the hotel for a civilized brunch. In the afternoon we bird up Jack’s Valley through the Willow Creek Wildlife Area and then all the way counter-clockwise around Eagle Lake (Lake # 3) to the opposite bottom\, at Christie Day Use Area and Gallatin Beach. Then clockwise back home for dinner. \nThen it’s up before dawn Sunday morning to grab some coffee and be on the road by 4:15 AM (yes\, seriously\, THAT early) for the Shaffer Sage-Grouse Lek east of Susanville (the “Lek”). Bring your scope/big camera. The site is about a mile from the main road\, so we would need to consolidate into four-wheel drive or high clearance vehicles. We will have to walk if it is in any way wet or rainy. After brunch back at Susanville\, we then cross the mountains and bird lake shores and meadows of Lake Almanor (Lake #4)\, birding down its west side and finally heading home from Canyondam via Oroville and Road 70. \nExpected birds include herons and egrets\, wading birds\, Sandhill Crane\, gulls (possibly some terns)\, eagles\, hawks and falcons\, sundry geese\, grebes and ducks\, a variety of woodpeckers (including White-headed and Williamson’s Sapsucker). Best of all are the mountain specialties\, e.g.\, Mountain Bluebird\, Stellar and Pinyon Jays\, Townsend’s Solitaire\, Cassin’s Finch\, Crossbills. And at the lek site we’ll be hoping for the sage trifecta\, i.e.\, Sage Thrasher\, Sagebrush Sparrow and of course the Greater Sage-Grouse. \nAccommodations:\nOnce confirmed for the trip\, individual arrangements for lodging should be made in advance at the Best Western Plus Trailside Inn\, 2785 Main Street\, Susanville\, CA (530) 257-4123. The hotel has given our group a discounted room rate\, so be sure to mention you are with the Yolo Audubon Society when you call to make your reservation. \nSpace is limited. Please contact the trip leader if interested.

SUMMARY:Birding In Colombia
DESCRIPTION:Field trip guide and photographer\, Kevin Gusé will present a travelogue of his 2017 trip to Colombia at the February members’ meeting. \nColombia was essentially off limits to birders for many years due to security issues stemming from political unrest. It is now relatively safe and more accessible to birders than ever before. With a varied landscape resulting in a rich avifauna\, Colombia boasts the largest species list of any country in the world (over 1900 species recorded to date)! Supporting almost 20% of the world’s bird species\, Colombia is now a “must visit” for birders. \nThe meeting will take place at the Davis Senior Center (646 A St\, Davis\, CA 95616). The program starts at 7:30 p.m.\, but everyone is invited for refreshments and conversation at 7:00.

SUMMARY:Tricolored Blackbird Update
DESCRIPTION:The featured speaker at Yolo Audubon’s January 17th meeting is Dr. Bob Meese\, one of the leading experts on tricolored blackbirds. He has worked with the species for 13 years and will present a summary of his research\, including a review of their natural history and remarkable breeding biology.   \nThe tricolor is currently under review for possible listing under the federal Endangered Species and California Endangered Species Acts\, and Bob will describe the efforts to monitor and conserve the species\, review its current status as measured by the 2017 Statewide Survey\, and review the factors responsible for the species’ rapid decline in abundance.  He will also discuss the prospects for their recovery. Bob will conclude with a description of his trapping and banding efforts and describe some of the surprising insights gained by having banded nearly 82\,000 tricolors and recapturing over 2\,000 previously banded birds. \nThe Yolo Audubon meeting will be held at the Davis Senior Center\, 646 A Street in Davis\, from 7:30 to 9 pm on January 17th. The meeting is open to the public\, and people are invited to arrive at 7 pm for conversation and refreshments.

SUMMARY:47th Putah Creek Christmas Bird Count
DESCRIPTION:Audubon’s Christmas Bird Count began as an alternative to the Christmas “Side Hunt” and has since become a fine tradition with tens of thousands of volunteers throughout the Americas braving the elements to take part in the effort. This long-term dataset has proven invaluable\, providing a picture of how the continent’s bird populations have changed in time and space over the past century. Yolo Audubon Society’s count circle is centered on Putah Creek and was initiated in 1971. Nearly 250 varieties of birds have been counted so far. Recent findings include Ring-necked Duck\, Lesser Scaup\, Common Loon\, Red-necked Grebe\, Rough-legged Hawk\, Greater Roadrunner\, Long- and Short-eared Owl\, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker\, Winter Wren\, and Mountain Bluebird. Come join us\, you never know what will turn up! For more information about the count\, including contact information for area leaders\, please see the main page. \nThe Putah Creek CBC is part of Audubon’s 118th Christmas Bird Count to be conducted this coming season\, with all counts held between the dates of Thursday\, December 14\, 2017 through Friday\, January 5\, 2018. You may participate in as many counts as you wish!\nFind out more: http://www.audubon.org/conservation/science/christmas-bird-count

SUMMARY:Double-Crested Cormorants
DESCRIPTION:Double-crested Cormorants (Phalacrocorax auritus) are seabirds known to use urban structures as nesting habitat. The old east span of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge and the eastern portion of the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge have hosted the two largest colonies of this species in the region. However\, now these colonies are declining\, and structures they once used to nest on are either being dismantled or blocked off for maintenance activities. So it begs the question: where will the cormorants nest in the future? Will they move to new areas of the bridges\, adopt the artificial platforms we designed for them on the new bay bridge\, on leave the central bay altogether? Come learn what our research for the past three decades tell us about the population dynamics of this resilient species and learn about our efforts to study the Bay Area population of this adaptable\, yet maligned\, bird. \nMark Rauzon was with the US Fish and Wildlife Service\, where he studied sea birds and endangered marine mammals in Hawai’i\, Alaska\, and California.  He is also an expert in the effects of invasive animals and plants on tropical islands. His latest book Isles of Amnesia details his experiences.  http://www.amazon.com/dp/0824846796/ref=pe_825000_114660910_TE_item\nMr. Rauzon is also a research associate with Point Blue and a Geography professor at Laney College in Oakland. \nMeredith Elliott is a Senior Scientist at Point Blue Conservation Science and has worked on a variety of seabird monitoring and diet projects\, as well as researching zooplankton communities in Greater Farallones and Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuaries. \nThe Yolo Audubon meeting will be held at the Davis Senior Center\, 646 A Street in Davis\, from 7:30 to 9 pm on November 15th. The meeting is open to the public\, and people are invited to arrive at 7 pm for conversation and refreshments.

SUMMARY:Birds of the Great Basin
DESCRIPTION:The October 18th Yolo Audubon meeting will feature Frank Fogarty\, an ecology doctoral student at the University of California\, Davis\, who will present a talk on the natural history and ecology of Great Basin birds\, with a focus on his research in riparian communities. \nIn the central Great Basin\, montane riparian areas exist as small islands within the larger\, arid landscape. Although riparian areas cover less than 1% of the total land area in the Great Basin\, more than 50% of breeding bird species in the region are associated with riparian habitats. These riparian areas occur mostly in canyons\, either along the canyon bottom or in the form of seeps\, and the total area of riparian vegetation in individual canyons can vary by orders of magnitude. Frank will discuss his recent work evaluating the extent to which the total area of riparian vegetation and the degree of fragmentation of this riparian area explains both variation in breeding riparian bird species richness and the likelihood that a given riparian species is present in a given canyon.\nThe Yolo Audubon meeting will be held at the Davis Senior Center\, 646 A Street in Davis\, from 7:30 to 9 pm on October 18th. The meeting is open to the public\, and people are invited to arrive at 7 pm for conversation and refreshments.
