Galápagos Islands: Land of Magic and Enchantment

Monthly Meeting

The Galapagos are truly a magical place of desert isles surrounded by fertile ocean waters. Most magical of all are the many species who have no fear of humans due to a lack of native predators on the islands. These volcanic islands, located 600 miles off the coast of South America, have never been connected to the mainland. All the plants and animals that arrived to the islands naturally had to cross large expanses of ocean either by swimming, flying, drifting on debris, or being carried by the wind. Thus, they evolved in isolation and minute differences in their morphology and behavior from island to island led Charles Darwin to develop his theory of natural selection.

Join former Yolo Audubon Society board member, Sid England, to learn about the ecology of these Islas Encantadas, to hear about his adventures there, and to marvel at the photographs taken by him and his wife, Randy Beaton.

Meeting begins at 7:30 but come early for cookies and conversation.
