Lark Sparrow © Kelli O’Neill

Last Saturday, Yolo Audubon held its first field trip for new birders at the Putah Creek Riparian Reserve in Davis, and by all accounts it was a huge hit.  The more than 25 participants ranged from university students to an enthusiastic gentleman in a wheel chair.  The common thread was a desire to get outdoors and learn more about birds, and our six board members who served as trip leaders delivered on that.  Some 48 species were seen, including  a handsome Lark Sparrow that posed for the group.  The consensus was that we should do more trips like this.  Stay tuned!
On Saturday, November 11th, Yolo Audubon will hold a clean-up at Babel Slough in West Sacramento.   It’s one of Yolo County’s best birding spots but has been plagued with trash dumping over the years.  We’re looking for a few strong people who are willing to scramble down the sides of the slough to attach ropes and help drag out large items that may have been around for years.  We’ll do some birding  too, of course, but this isn’t an outing for families or those, like me, who don’t scramble so well anymore!  If you’d like to help, please email Yolo Audubon.
I want to mention the passing of Nick Fittinghoff, a long-time Yolo Audubon member.  In fact, he was probably active when our name was Davis Audubon.  Nick’s family asked that donations be made to Yolo Audubon in his memory.  You may go to the Davis Enterprise to read the lovely obituary written about Nick.
Many thanks to those of you who responded to the recent YAS fundraising appeal.  If you’ve been thinking about it, but haven’t done it yet, please go here to support our programs.

Good birding!
