From the President: September 2023

Yolo Audubon is back from its summer hiatus and has many field trips and presentations planned from now through May.  We hope you’ll join us.  We’re kicking the season off with a new field trip aimed at new birders on September 30th.  This is a great opportunity for those of you who want to work on your I.D. skills.

For those who want to commit to a great extended weekend of birding activities, I recommend that you consider participating in the Central Valley Birding Symposium on November 16th-19th in Stockton.  This annual event has field trips, workshops and speaker presentations from California’s top birders.  Yolo Audubon is pleased to be a sponsor of the symposium.

If you want to support wetlands conservation and education close to home, please consider going to Yolo Basin Foundation’s annual fundraiser Bucks for Ducks on October 1st at the El Macero Country Club.  In addition to the gala event itself, you may want to bid on the online auction, which features nature photography and art by several of our Yolo Audubon members, as well as other items.

On a related note, waterfowl hunting season will be starting on October 21st at the Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area, and the early dove season is just finishing up.  Check Yolo Basin Foundation’s website for a map with information on areas that are closed to non-hunters during the hunting season.  Waterfowl hunt days are Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday, but the closed areas are in effect daily until February.

Fall migration is in full swing, and the weather is beautiful.  I hope you’ll find the time to enjoy it!

Good birding!
