It may not feel like autumn in Yolo County with temperatures over 100 degrees the first week of October, but fall bird migration is well underway, as evidenced but some of the exciting bird sightings detailed below in board member Zane Pickus’ column. We hope you have had a chance to get out in the field to observe some of these special migratory visitors.
This month National Audubon is celebrating Birdability Week October 21-27 to encourage birders around the country to help make birding more accessible to everyone. In honor of Birdability Week, Yolo Bird Alliance is hosting an accessible bird outing on October 26 at Lake Solano County Park. You can find more about this and other upcoming YBA field trips on our website or Facebook page. National Audubon is also sponsoring several virtual events which are free to registrants.
YBA is a sponsor again this year of the Central Valley Birding Symposium, which will be held in Stockton November 21-24. This is an excellent conference for learning more about Central Valley birds and connecting with other birders in our region. While it may seem like November is still a ways off, registration for the conference has opened and some of the field trips are already filling up. You can find out more about the Symposium and how to register here.
Finally, don’t forget to vote on November 5. In addition to the high-profile political contests on the ballet, take a look at Proposition 4, the climate bond. If passed, it would be the largest investment of public funding for climate protection in state history. Please click here to read more about it.
Good birding. The sandhill cranes are already in the area by the thousands!
